Women's march - January 21, 2017
Sigrid Freese in Washington DC -
I heard there were 100,000 in Denver. Amazing. A great sign in DC was "I've seen smarter cabinets at IKEA." Made me smile. Linda Plaut - Hope all of you who marched today (wherever) had a great time today. Dave, Patty, their friend Nora from Aspen and I were a happy foursome. We spotted n’er another Lumper. I’ve been in mourning since election night when it became clear Trump would win, but today certainly lifted my spirits. I’d love to have news of everyone’s experiences and news of your favorite signs. The creativity was amazing. For example, a poster in style of Obama’s Hope one, but with Trump’s face on it and the word at the bottom was “Nope.” Another: “We’re stuck with a sandwich – white bread on outside, baloney inside, lots of Russian dressing, and a tiny pickle.” Jessica Pearson - Jeff and I did a 3-generation march with our daughers and grandbabies. Sorry I never ran into the lumpers. Mercifully, there were too many people. Cia Wenzel - I was there and have never felt so proud of Denver. Such a polite, well behaved, cleverly signed enormous crowd. Lumpers were out in force, even if few of us saw each other after the initial gathering. My son Tom and wife Kate were there too, having to walk from Madison and Cofax because the buses were too full. Now, we just have to figure out how to do the follow up work. |

We're ready to march!! |
from Myra Isenhart for her children/grandchildren
Our power went out for several hours Sat am, so I couldn't get out the garage door in time to meet with Lumpers (my Denver hiking group), but connected at the Littleton Depot for light rail with others from the same neighborhood who were also delayed. One lady was covered with buttons from all her marches since Reagan shut down the airline unions. On that 1/2 hour ride we educated the younger ones who Shirley Chisholm was, among other topics, then marched together. Her stories were from a union steward's perspective on the history we've all lived in different ways, but come to the same conclusions regarding the threat from the Trump administration.
The Denver Women's March was absolutely the most inspiring event; estimates of the Denver crowd btwn 80-100,000. Many walked with organized groups like Planned Parenthood, Interfaith Council or Colorado Ceasefire, but probably even more women with family members |
or friends. Lots of young men & a few older ones;
women of every age & shade, in strollers, on roller blades, in wheel chairs. Events were held world wide, including Yellow Horse AK where the temp was -6. All of this totally spontaneous from a suggestion of a retired DC woman who posted on Facebook following the election. In Denver MANY original posters/signs, it looked to me as if the most common was protecting reproductive choice, but there were also many concerned with health care, and a number mentioned Putin. Flavor of the signs: a very few discouraging (I can't believe I'm still marching for women's rights) but most upbeat (My body, my choice), some scatological ("Pussy Power" and tons of pink pussy hats), some hilarious (a picture of Trump's head + "we shall overcomb"). It was clear that, regardless of the group needing to have its rights protected, there will be pushback to this crazy agenda...big time. You can bet that candidates of every party were watching. Now we have the momentum, it’s up to all of us to invest time and money in the cause we most cherish. |
