Just a couple of pictures of a great hike yesterday. We saw exactly one calypso orchid but it was a beauty. A patch of shooting stars, a few coral root. More pictures on facebook. This is really a nice trail. The St Vrain river is beautiful right at the start with lots of flat rocks for sitting and putting feet in water, maybe even wading once the run off dies down. Still quite strong yesterday. The trail itself is in good condition, winds gently up and down through pine trees mostly, with lots of shade and the river always within sight or sound. At just about 2 miles we reached the junction with a forest service road and thought we might continue on to Miller's Rock, another .7 miles. But once we walked up a fairly steep 2/10 of a mile, we got to a ridge with lots of good logs for sitting and snacking. The trail went down from there so, motivation diminished, we decided it was a good turn around point. A tip. My directions on getting to the trail head are accurate, but at this time, there is road reconstruction going on so we had a big (and beautiful) detour on Lee Hill Road around the section being worked on. Easy to follow, but then our problems began. Driving on James Canyon Drive, suddenly the GPS said we were on Overland Road. Thinking we had missed the turn to continue on James Canyon, we turned around and went back to Jamestown where a local explained that though the name changed we had been on the right road. It's a nice paved though winding road to the top of a big hill. Shortly after the pavement ends the turn into the trail comes up. The sign is partially hidden by a tree, so go slow once you crest the hill so you don't miss the right turn. |
