Lumper Elizabeth Lord who is a professional organizer and has helped lots of seniors downsize may have some good ideas. See 'Recycle Large Items' below Craigslist has a section called "Free Stuff" where you can give away almost anything. I've listed magazines like Opera News, gone in a day. Used slide carousels and other boxes to hold slides. If you haven't used it, your kids can show you how, or I can. Sigrid Freese |

They take those huge fat televisions and recycle them. They also take batteries and old computers. The metal and “guts” of a computer can apparently be stripped to its component parts.
Excellent hauler. I recently was hired by a family to clear out the condo of a reclusive man. It was too emotional for the family to cope with and they didn’t want to keep his belongings. I supervised the hauler and his assistant and in five hours, the space was clear except for his books and family albums. The hauler is Robbie Pollak. His number is 303/947-7100. Tell him I referred you and he’ll be very fair with you.
If you have clutter or an organizing project that feels a bit daunting, I will be happy to come and give you a jump-start. I work in blocks of three hours and that is often enough to inspire and motivate even the most skilled procrastinator!

Household Goods
I had three couches to dispense. Two I inherited and had been in garage for years and one fairly good one I replaced. At any rate Anne told me about the Good Couch that will come and remove said piece of furniture for $50. For me that was a bargain. At any rate we put everything in the garage they came yesterday and took them away for $50. Their phone number is: 303-246-2174 in the event any Lumper is interested. They are very busy and I left a message and I got a call back and a pickup date three weeks out.

The Action Center in Jeffco. Kathryn Ballinger ([email protected]) volunteers there one day a week and would be happy to answer any questions you have. A most worthy cause!
http://theactioncenterco.org/
The Center distributes household goods of all types (linens, towels, kitchenware, small appliances, hiking/camping paraphernalia, etc.) as well as food and clothing to the poor and homeless. They also have a huge 'garage sale' fundraiser each year where they sell larger or fancier items that their clientele can't use. I know they would be delighted to receive any and all donations as the need is HUGE!
Donations of stuff: 8755 W. 14th Avenue, Lakewood. The drive-thru dock is located on the east side of The Action Center and is open for donations:

Books
public library, Denver, Jeffco for their annual used book sale.
Tattered Cover also buys used books now and you get store credit. Only take in 3-4 bags or boxes at a time. Best store to take them to is on Colfax across from East High
Try Powell's Books in Portland OR. Easy to use on line process, and they give you a free shipping label. You can get paypal credit, or credit to buy more books at Powells. Prices minimal and they only take about 1 in 10 books, but it adds up.
Sigrid Freese
Instead of shipping books to Powells….even tho it’s as wonderful as Tattered is here, consider donating books to Park Hill Book Store Coop on 23rd near Dexter/Dahlia. Wonderful little place.

Electronics
There's a really interesting and successful organization on S. Acoma St. in Denver where we have taken our electronics for years. These folks repair and re-furbish them and either give or sell them very inexpensively to lower-income people. It's called Tech For All. Quite a workshop and sustainable, too. http://www.denvertechforall.org/ This might be a good place to purchase computers/laptops and who knows what else?

Moving Company
I have been happy with Amazing Moves. They delivered some new furniture to me, took and stored some furniture when getting new wood floor put in and took a couch to re-upholsterer and brought it back when done.
Joan Brennan
I too Highly Recommend Amazing Moves

We used Amazing Movers thought they were great!

Small World Movers - owned and run by Asanga Abeywickrema, a good friend of mine.

I have never used Asanga’s company because i haven’t moved since he opened his company, but have recommended him to friends who have been very pleased. Reasonably priced, good people.

I had great luck with Local Moving LLC (303) 355-6683

I would suggest Bayuad – excellent service, NAID-certified (National Association of Information Destruction), and they provide employment for people with disabilities. See http://www.bayauddocumentservices.org/

A couple of years ago, I used Shred-All Denver, located at 2001 S. Platte River Drive, 80223. There is a drop-off location. The cost was $5/bag, and shredding was done within 24 hours. On-site, I believe. The drop-off "bay" is in an industrial bldg. Hours: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. "Dierdre" can be called for questions at 720-442-8478. At least she was there a year ago.
Directions from Broadway: W. on Evans across the Platte River to S. Lipan. N on Lipan to the building with the sign "Publication Printers." Dierdre will tell you which bay to use.
It also worked for some friends of ours who were moving a year ago, who had a lifetime's worth of tax returns and other material to dispose of.

Office Depot will shred it while you stand there. I used Office Depot for Frank’s stuff and it was easy.

I recently had Mobile Shred come and shred a number of file filled boxes. They pulled right up to the garage and shredded the paper on site. Thought the price was reasonable. I have taken boxes to a public event which happen every once in awhile but the line are long and there is the possibility the truck(s) will run out of capacity if you do not get there early. Can look for these on line.
Joan Brennan
I had great luck with Shred-It at 3925 Monaco Pkwy - (877) 617-1901. Think it was $5 a box and they might do cds too.
Katherine Dines
Shred-It will come to you and shred in front of you. They charge by the pound

Fluorescent Light Recycle
You can drop off used compact fluorescent light bulbs(CFLs) at any Ace Hardware store in Colorado. Energy Star qualified CFLs use up to 75% less energy and last up to 10 times longer than incandescent light bulbs. However, CFLs contain small amounts of mercury and must be recycled appropriately.
Recycle the long Flourescent Tube lights It is primarily for commercial recycling, and you pay THEM to take them (like electronics). Their program is:
Drop off:
4ft lamps = 60 cents per lamp
8ft lamps = $1.20 per lamp
the lamps need to be boxed and clearly labeled upon drop-off.
However, my contact was most gracious in saying that I could bring her just one or two and hand them in without a box.

Cell Phones for Re-use
women's shelters like to take them to give to their clients for emergencies. I believe the cell phone companies help with cheap or free plans for this good purpose. So I found one that was happy to take my cell phone, and all I had to do was mail it to them. Easy. Don't forget to delete your phone call logs and contacts phone numbers stored in the phone. Their formal name is Gateway Battered Women Services, but I left out the "battered" on the address for privacy.
