Sigrid Freese -
17 of us got the holiday weekend off to a good start this morning with a short, sweet, and steep hike up Mount Herman, just west of Monument. The last 4 miles to the trailhead are on a dirt road, but although narrow, the road surface is fairly smooth and a regular car can do it. Lots of places to pull over if a car comes the opposite direction. Even tho the trail is steep in places, almost all of it was in the shade this morning with lots of different flowers, depending on the amount of light and water and everyone liked it. A few pictures to whet your appetite for getting into the mountains or to soothe your soul if you have to stay home. It's about a 3 mile round trip hike, 50 mile drive one way to the trailhead. Thanks to google, Judy Marks made a serendipitous discovery of the Wisdom Tea House in Monument, located on 2nd Street. We all came in, ordered quickly and within 15 minutes tea, French press coffee, salads, scones, cakes etc started to appear in a big room up a narrow flight of stairs. Delicious food and the best service I've ever seen for such a big group in a small place. May has added a new section to the web site, "great coffee (and tea) in out of the way places" and this charmer will certainly be on the list. |
