some good thoughts about being prepared for anything.
some good thoughts about being prepared for anything.
Ann Weaver
In one way or another, a dozen seasoned Lumpers (maybe 13 but I'll avoid the number) got caught short this morning, on what might be called the cusp of two seasons. We contributed a multitude of weather "guesses" as we converged on a nifty new-to-all trail within the wonder of Douglas County's growing open space system. What were we missing? Gloves, hats, extra layers . . . the essentials. Damp, thick, gray air was visible to the south in the Black Forest area. The entire front range was invisible to the west. I don't know where the north and east images lay. The wind was strong and cold even as we stepped out of the cars. In true stalwart form, we hiked four miles with thoughts of adding more; at the point of decision, unanimously, we headed for coffee . . . chilled and chastened. Lesson learned is that we all need to be better prepared, no matter what the outlook or season. I intend to pack a gym bag to keep in my car or wedged in when in someone else's . . . layers, an old pair of running shoes, energy bars, etc., etc. We could be just as chilled after a sudden drenching rain on a summer's day as we were in the icy wind today. I'm sure open to other people's inspirations on the topic. Lumpingly, Ann Weaver Addendum - I have in my pack always a pair of thin gloves, a warm hat, a rain jacket/windbreaker and a dry shirt in a zip lock bag. Rarely have to pull them out but was sure glad they were there this AM. Sigrid |
