Travel
anybody found a good travel agent (here or in the UK) who could help plan a trip through the country side around London? Our theme is literary sites near London.

Dana Welch at The Travel Society
Lives her work; travels extensively. Have known her--a couple of years ahead of my kids in school in the Roaring Fork Valley. She was a couple of years ahead of my kids in school, now in her mid-fifties. Has planned very complex, special trips for Ruth Warren and Colleen Abdoulah and friends. Been at Travel Society on Cherry a couple of blocks south of Leetsdale for years and years. Maybe you remember when lots of us used Beecher Stanfill. Her daughter,Whitney, works with Dana. I know Ruth and Colleen would love to tell you lots more about her as a travel agent.

Agent
I suggest she call Margaret Beardall at Travel Square One, 303-989-9900 x 646 or [email protected]. For many years, I didn’t bother with travel agents. But Margaret was referred by 2 different friends, and she arranged our big, complicated trip to France, Spain and the QM2 to sail home last fall. She is fabulous to work with, and very knowledgeable. Especially if your friend is stressed, it’d be worth it to have Margaret do the research and reservations. If she calls Margaret, tell her to use my name.

Nepal
I just want to remind anyone who might wish to trek in Nepal that Frank and I had an extraordinarily good experience with Shyam Lama - [email protected] He led us and our two friends on the Gokyo trek, using tea houses en route. He was wonderfully personable and attentive, seeming to sense before we did what would make us comfortable and safe.
He’s also very experienced. We found him via a former neighbor, Marcus, who was running a nonprofit in Katmandu. Marcus asked around for someone who’d be good for a first trek with his children who were 8 and 10 at the time, and was extremely pleased with Shyam, whom he had guide many more treks for him, including one with his parents when they were in their 80’s. So it’s clear Shyam is good with people 8 to 80. Marcus was so impressed with Shyam that he hired him for various work with the nonprofit. (Since then Marcus has moved back to Boulder but stays in touch with Shyam.)
Other nice aspects of trekking with Shyam are he’ll custom design a trek for you, as demanding or easy as you like, and the cost is very reasonable. (As our friends said, with great pleasure, re our trek with him, “This trip is coming in on time and under budget.”) There are so many companies offering treks in Nepal, but personally we liked this chance to support a local
guide, and we liked that the trip was tailored for the four of us, so we weren’t in some huge group.

Tanzania
We can also recommend highly a guide in Tanzania –
Kapanya Amma Kitaba- [email protected].
He’s delightful and, like Shyam, very organized. He takes people up Kilimanjaro and other mountains and also
organizes safaris.

Alaska
Cloud Ridge Naturalists, run by Audrey Benedict, has a website your friend can look to: www.CloudRidge.org. Audrey's email is [email protected]. Audrey may be in South America on a trip right now but will respond when she gets home. I don't imagine 2011 dates are on the website yet, but many of the programs will remain the same. One of the Alaska programs next year will have a focus on photography, something like "conservation in focus", etc. Audrey's trips are always full of interesting naturalist-type people. The trip leaders, the crew, and most especially the food (& wine!) is always superb.

Safari in Africa
Planning a safari in Africa and would appreciate any recommendations you have for a travel company that meets three basic requirements:
Really good wildlife viewing (e.g., Tanzania, Kenya, etc.)
2. Very comfortable
3. Good value and not too pricey Randy and Sarah
Bob and I would certainly vote for OAT- we did Tanzania in 2007- a trip of a lifetime for all of us. Barbara Brett
Whenever possible, we like to use local companies. In 1997 Frank and I had a fabulous experience with a local man, Kapanya Amma Kita, climbing Mt. Meru before climbing Kilimanjaro. (We had already signed up with another company for Kilimanjaro and the safari, but would have happily done those parts of our trip with Kapanya if we hadn’t already been committed.) Laurie Wilson recently climbed Kilimanjaro and did a safari with him, so would be a good person to talk to. Among other things, he’s charming. I have two e-mails for him, and I suggest you try both. Because he’s often out on expeditions, he doesn’t always reply quickly.
