Lots of Lumpers enjoying a morning walk in the Riverside Cemetery. Riverside Cemetery, established in 1876, is Denver, Colorado's oldest operating cemetery. More than 67,000 people are buried there, including 1,000 veterans, many from Civil War days. The Cemetery occupies a 77-acre site between Brighton Boulevard and the east bank of the South Platte River, approximately 4 miles downstream from downtown Denver, Colorado. When first opened, the graveyard's secluded location on the South Platte River bank and the surrounding greenery made it a popular burial choice for prominent, wealthy families who put ornate headstones to mark their graves. The opening of the Burlington Railroad in the 1890s changed this, spurring industrial growth in the neighborhood, and the proportion of unmarked graves of impoverished citizens rose dramatically. However, Riverside remains one of the area's most significant cemeteries, and retains importance for scholars studying the early history of Denver and as tourist destination. In 2001, 3000 people went on walking tours of the site. |
Pollinator Meadow: Wonderful project to help save our BEES!!!!
Stone house on the Hill: This is called the "old stone house", probably used by caretakers or perhaps people needing a little chapel for services. Friends of Riverside organization hope to restore it. LOVE that you can see the modern "Remington Shaver Building" downtown in the background!!
