We call these “training hikes”…our first tough hikes of the summer season to get us in shape after the more flatland hikes of winter and muddy spring. Mount Galbraith Trail. Wonderful. Only about 4.5 miles, but straight up! Well, 1000’ elevation gain anyway. 15 lucky Lumpers enjoyed the clear, sunny, albeit pretty hot, day. We had a very special guest, a young man from Kazan, Republic of Tatarstan, one of the most economically developed region of Russia, in the Volga District. He’s here for a few weeks on business. Please note: this is Tatar NOT Tartars. Different people. Also of note were vast quantities of the bush with the white flowers. Lumpers commented that it was the most robust flowering they had ever seen. They are Boulder Raspberries. Martha taught us another cool thing. This forlorn looking little flower on the trail is actually just closed up in the sunlight. It opens up beautifully AT NIGHT! I thought it was interesting that it also has those little tendrils on the back like a columbine. |
