Activities for Children
from Linda Plaut:
Have any of you been to the wildlife sanctuary (1946 County Road 53, Keenesburg, CO 80643-4209)?
If so, what did you think of it? I’m thinking of taking my 9 year old grandson there this Friday, but would be glad for any responses –
especially if you think it’s worth a 70 minute car trip. If you have other enticing suggestions for something special to do with this kid,
I’m happy to have those also.
from Mikee (AnnaBelle) Kapelke:
I think the Wild Life Sanctuary is well worth the trip. It is so different
from a zoo. Feeding days are Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. No timelines
for feeding times. The employees drive a golf cart around and throw the 5+
pounds of meat over the fences.
They say the animals are more active at dawn and dusk, but the Sanctuary
doesn’t open until 10, so dawn is out. We found the tigers active at all
times. It is hot because you are walking on a boardwalk over the cages. It
is so well planned and such a good cause. Volunteers abound and are very
helpful and informative.
Right on the corner of I-76 there is a nice restaurant—The Pepper Pod
(closed on Tuesdays). Also, as you walk the boardwalk at the Sanctuary, the
end pavilion is for the lions and there are picnic tables there, and a few
concessions.
It’s not a bad drive, fast after I-25 on I-76. You do pass Barr Lake on the way.
from Sigrid:
Does he like cars? If so, the Clive Cussler antique car museum in Arvada is
absolutely fabulous.
The children's garden at the Denver Botanic Gardens is
fun for all ages.
Walking around the various gardens and public areas at
the So. Platte/Cherry Creek confluence was something my grand neice and
nephew enjoyed last summer and they were about the same age. They were
fascinated by the skateboard park, and we all waded in the Platte at the
confluence.
The Children's Museum has some neat activities for that age
group.
Drive downtown and then use the rent a bikes to get around.
from Judy Hutchinson:
My grandsons that age love the aquarium downtown as well as the zoo.
